This simple asset is saved and can be imported to unreal.ĭue to the latest changes towards the houdini engine - everyone can load and use this asset for free. Here it is testing the toggle fror the circle or line parameter. The chi("tg") is a channel that is connecting the parameters of the asset to be usable in the code. The Wrangle however looks like this - it does the same thing but also provides normals to have the circle point into its middle and the line point to the side. As usual I do that with a wrangle but you can do it with the attribute create sop - which would look like this The key for the unreal synergy comes from one simple attribute that is placed on the points. The setup allows to toggle between the two options while providing parameters like the size of both and the amount of points.Ī very basic houdini way of creating points in this manner. In this basic example I create points of either a line or a circle. The houdini setup is a HDA (Houdini Digital Asset) that has parameters to control an output of some kind. The series will go into a fairly complex use case with procedural setups to replicate a street and building layout - but the very basic foundation behind it all is the following idea. this post provides a brief idea on how powerfull the houdini engine can be for the artist working in unreal. While the series will take the assets on top to create what you see below. They lost some sympathy from me that day.As a preparation for the upcoming series which will be available on the Auditorium tier - I wanted to share a quick and public explanation of the basic concept. The only explanation other than incompetence is trying to create buzz - which they did. I'm a big fan of SideFX, but this one was very unfortunate and not good style by them. To be fair - the first line in the press release was " SideFX is pleased to announce that Houdini Engine for UE4 and Houdini Engine for Unity are now available for commercial customers for free." Unfortunately the title of that press release also was " Houdini Engine for Unreal and Unity now Free". (The 3 free versions for the indie license actually haven't changed.) It's only free when you already have a commercial license, which obviously most people don't have. They made it sound as if the Houdini Engine usage is free, but it absolutely isn't. The marketing of SideFX screwed up on this one big time in my opinion. I know they aren't a charity and I don't blame them for this but please don't advertise something as being supposedly 'free' if there is still a giant paywall. Just one question: what the fuck is the point of having a free plugin if I still have to sell my kidneys in order to get one of them pricey licenses!? I only need to use this for personal projects anyways but when I open it up in UE4 my plugin says it can't create a houdini session because I don't have a license. I only need to have HDA but when I exproted to HDA it added in an NC to end apperantly meaning 'Non Commercial' alright then, I don't care. fbx or any of those file formats, also no big deal. Though I found out that I couldn't export in. I installed houdini from the SideFX website and because I still like to be able to afford something more than only bread and water I had to go with Apprentice version. Alright so I'm kinda confused right now, I've decided to give houdini a try after seeing news about this UE4 plugin being free.
